Place a bird bath

Birds love a place to bathe and drink

Water is essential for our feathered little friends to drink and bathe in. Seed eaters in particular need to drink a lot of water because their food lacks it.

Tip for today
Place a bird bath in your garden or on your terrace.

These tips are from vogelbescherming.be (=bird protection institute in Belgium)

  • The bird bath must be cleaned on a weekly basis. Use a diluted, non-toxic disinfectant and rinse thoroughly.
  • Birds are distracted when bathing, making them vulnerable to attacks from predators. Placing the water bath near bushes and trees where birds can retreat to clean their feathers after bathing will attract more visitors.
  • In times of drought, birds will try to drink water from barrels or troughs, unfortunately many birds will drown. You can make them safer by placing a plank, slat or branch on which birds can land to drink
How to make your own birdbath

You can make a simple and money-saving alternative out of a terra-cotta container and saucer. This is also a great way to use your pots that might be cracked or chipped.

Pick an empty place in the border and just turn the container upside down, set the saucer atop the base and fill it with water. Birds will enjoy visiting, and it’s a pretty, natural accent in the garden.
