Hack your happiness hormones: Endorphin

Exercise gives you a boost of endorphins

We may not have a ‘money tree’, but we can have a lucky tree, of which we can reap the fruits (Dopamine, serotonin, oxytocin and endorphin) ourselves. These ‘neurotransmitters’ or messengers in our brains give us a feeling of happiness. And the nice thing is that we don’t have to wait passively, but that we can set them in motion ourselves!

The last few weeks we have been talking about Dopamine, Serotonin, Oxytocin. Today it is the turn of endorphins.

Just like morphine, endorphins work as painkillers and sedatives. Yet these lucky endorphins are not only known because they block our pain signals, but also because they induce euphoria. The “runner’s high” is caused by a large rush of endorphins.

Together with regular exercise, laughter is one of the easiest ways to release endorphins. Even anticipating a laugh, for example when attending a comedy show, increases the level of endorphins. Bringing your sense of humor to work, sending that funny WhatsApp and laughing a lot during the day is a great way to keep the doctor away.

The smell of vanilla and lavender is also linked to the production of endorphins.

Studies have shown that dark chocolate and spicy foods can cause the brain to release endorphins. Keep some scented oils and some dark chocolate on your desk for a quick endorphin boost during the day.

Tip for today:
Boost your endorphins!
