Feed our feathered friends

Be kin dto nature and feed the birds

A cold snap is coming and birds can use some extra energy. Did you know that on a cold night, smaller species sometimes lose 10 percent of their weight because they need the energy to maintain their temperature? It’s too bad, that doesn’t work for me 😉

Tip for today:
Give the birds extra energy by providing them with fat balls and supplementary food. In case of light frost, you can also offer fresh drinking water.

 5 tips for feeding birds

  1. Shake out your tablecloth in the garden.
  2. Feeding can be done all year round, but especially when it’s freezing and/or snowing.
  3. Do not feed too much at once. Feed preferably in the morning and towards the end of the afternoon. After a long, cold night, birds need a hearty breakfast and in the evening they eat their bellies full to get through the night.
  4. Do not give food that contains salt. There is enough salt in the cheese and bread you sprinkle. Don’t give birds margarine or butter, it has a laxative effect.
  5. Food that freezes easily, such as apples, should be fed as a whole and not in small pieces.

Who eats what?

Birds also have preferences. So depending on which birds visit your garden, you can customise the menu to your guests ;-).

  1. Sparrow: mixed seed, weed seed, broken corn
  2. Finch: mixed seed, sunflower seeds (the black ones are very energy-rich).
  3. Great Tit: sunflower seeds, fat balls, peanut cake, peanuts.
  4. Blackbird: kitchen waste, fruit (apples).
  5. Chew: mixed seed, weed seed, broken corn, grain mixture, bread.
