The number of children in poverty has increased enormously this year. And this happens next to our doors, in our communities!
My heart breaks when I imagine that there will be children who do not get presents this Sinterklaas or Christmas.
Hence a warm call as tip for today:
If you still have old toys (or new ;-)) lying around somewhere, take them to an association that collects and distributes them. These toys will give children a smile this holiday season 🙂
Please make sure the toys are still in a good condition. If they have to be thrown away, it will cost the volunteers money.
A few examples of organisations that collect and distribute toys are:
In Belgium: Moeders voor moeders and Spullenhulp. At De Kringwinkel you can even request free collection. Centers for Asylum seekers are also happy with toys.
In the Netherlands: Speelgoedbank Toys4u and Het Vergeten kind, Stichting babyspullen, Kind in Asielzoekcentra, …
I suppose, there will also be a lot of local initiatives, most of which run on volunteer work. Go browse or contact the local OCMW to see how you can donate toys in your neighborhood.
Het aantal kansarme kinderen is afgelopen jaren enorm gestegen. En dat is geen ver-van-mijn-bed show. Dat is hier, lokaal bij ons.
Mijn hart breekt als ik me voorstel dat er kindjes zijn die geen cadeautjes krijgen met Sinterklaas of Kerstmis.
Vandaar een warme oproep als tip van de dag:
Als je nog ergens oud (of nieuw) speelgoed hebt liggen, breng het dan in deze periode naar een vereniging die speelgoed inzamelt en verdeelt. Zij kunnen er nog kindjes mee blij maken deze feestdagen!
Zorg er wel voor dat het speelgoed nog goed en bruikbaar is. Als die verenigen het zelf moeten weggooien, kost hun dat geld.

Er zijn wellicht een heleboel lokale initiatieven, die meestal op vrijwilligerswerk draaien. Ga eens browsen om te kijken hoe je speelgoed kan doneren in jouw buurt.
