Learn the basics of First Aid

Learn First Aid

You can save life knowing what to do in a live threatening situation.
Fortunately, such situations don’t come our way every day.

But small accidents do. A cut, a sprained foot, a fall, …
And if there is someone around to help you – with confidence and a little knowledge – it makes all the difference.

If you are not medically trained, you do not always dare to offer help or at least doubt whether you are doing the right thing.

After an EHBO course, in most cases you know what to do and you will be able to quickly deal with a dangerous situation.

Tip for today
Take a first aid course.
(or at least install the International Red Cross First Aid app on your phone).

This app does not replace first aid classes, but allows everyone to learn the basics of first aid at home or to look up what to do in an emergency. Both for banal injuries, such as a nosebleed or a graze, and for serious accidents, it is important to be able to react quickly and correctly.

A bicycle fall and someone who knew nothing about it

A friend came to us after a bike ride. His arm hurt and he assumed this was because his elbow was dislocated (I don’t even know if this is possible at all).

You have to jerk at my arm now, so you can pull it back into place and I will have less pain‘. he said. As if he had been through this several times before.

I hesitated. Is this medically justified? And how exactly was I supposed to pull? Hard or soft? Could I mis-pull?

I wanted to help him as he seemed so sure this would be the right solution. But the thought of pulling his arm suddenly made me terribly nauseous.

After some more bickering, I took him to a real doctor instead of playing doctor myself.

The doctor told him his arm was broken and ordered me to lie down on the floor because I was more pale than the patient.

At that moment I decided to follow a first aid course so that next time I would be able to assess the situation much better and know immediately what to do.
